From Thursday 13 to Monday 31 of October in Artium Gallery:
YTO ARANDA: INTERACTIVE ELECTRONIC PAINTINGS
Experimental electronics and physical computing

The concept Interactive electronic painting is created by Yto Aranda after a decade of research on the relationship between painting and electronic or digital media. Since 2008, the artist focuses on the realization of this proyect which is now on display in the exhibition «YTO ARANDA: INTERACTIVE ELECTRONIC PAINTINGS» through two flagship projects «Demented e-paintings» and «R x 1000 stage 2.0.»

«My interest in presenting these works in a single show is to close an initiation step in this line of work, which basically involved creating a very strong relationship between contemporary art and technology and traditional art through its most symbolic notion: painting» .

There will also be a series of «light paintings» from the artist that that are part of the Artium Gallery collection.

For over 25 years, Yto Aranda has worked on painting, developing since 1990 a great interest in computers. This led to her early venture into the Internet, developing projects of net.art, mail art and telepresence. Finally, since 2008, she has turned her interest to experimental electronics and physical computing which she sees as an opportunity to unite in one artwork the different languages and disciplines of her interest.

«I believe that through the confluence of painting and digital media, I am able to bring in something different which reflect the individual route (at the same time collective) of my artistic and social experience,» she says.

At present many digital artists are taking a turn toward what is called Physical Computing, says the artist: «This means bringing computer knowledge to the physical world: what was a virtual expression, is now moving closer to the physical plane. This is achieved through microcontrollers and electronics. «

Demented e-paintings

It is a work process that began in 2009 with the construction of the website https://yto.cl/demente/ in order to document the stages of creation and exhibition of the work. The proposal is a sound and visual piece. Consisting of modules of 30 by 30 centimeters and paintings of 100 by 100 centimeters. It aims to create and recycle circuits that are then integrated into the painting where the viewer has access to buttons, switches and sensors that let you interact with the work.

The work Demented e-paintings included an open call inviting people to collaborate using text, images and / or electronic circuits. This as a way to include others in the creative process. The collaborations were inserted into the e-painting in different ways. The work is itinerant and mutant, it has been exhibited in various places and is always changing.

 Rx1000 2.0
Resistance per thousand, second stage. It’s a piece of 200 by 160 centimeters composed of one thousand one hundred and twenty two hand-painted paintings. This work started in 2009 as part of the 9 th Biennial of Video and Media Arts (Museum of Contemporary Art, Chile), with an open invitation to the public to answer the question «How do you interpret the word resistance?». A thousand answers were received which later were written in each one of the paintings and published on the website Rx1000. Meanwhile, in the museum, devices connected to circuits were installed. These allowed the vibratory movement of the web- painting made possible through the public intervention in the Internet.

Currently Artium presents the second stage of this project, where the concept of network is developed through the use of sensors that require at least eight people for the work to vibrate as a whole.

Light Paintings

The light paintings are made by inscribing on high-density acrylic and on which the color is created primarily with light and its variations.
